Cadillac to adopt Italian Diesel:
VM Motori Jointly Developing V-6 diesel with GM
VM Motori is jointly developing with General Motors Corp., (GM) a premium V-6 turbo-diesel engine that will launch in the Cadillac CTS in 2009.
The new 2.9-liter V-6 diesel engine (184 kW/250 hp), which was unveiled by GM at the Geneva Motor Show on March 6, features state-of-the-art injection and combustion technology for low emissions and high performance.
GM’s development of its new engine is being coordinated under the leadership of GM Powertrain’s European operations in Turin, Italy, in cooperation with VM Motori based in Cento, Italy. VM Motori will build the new unit at its plant in Cento, Italy, and is responsible for the engine’s design, development and bench testing. GM Powertrain will focus on the development of the clean combustion process, electronic engine control and exhaust-gas aftertreatment, as well as calibration and
integration into GM vehicles.
The GM V-6 diesel is a compact 60-degree bank angle, 83.0 mm bore and 90.4 mm stroke, which results in displacement of 2935 cubic centimeters and a compression ratio of 16.5:1. It has a flexible architecture to allow installations in both longitudinal and transverse applications and can be adapted to a wide range of two- or four-wheel-drive vehicles.
The engine was designed to provide low emissions and outstanding performance and fuel economy. The engine is designed to meet future EURO 5 emissions standards.
The cylinder block bed plate is made of Compacted Graphite Iron (CGI). This provides a compact and robust structure and makes it possible to improve the traditional parameters of rigidity and mass, and optimizes engine packaging, refinement and performance.
The cylinder heads, with four valves per cylinder, dual overhead camshaft and hydraulic tappets, are aluminum, while the rocker cover and intake manifold are made from plastic. This contributes to the engine’s overall reduced weight.
The engine’s design includes a high-pressure common-rail injection system, which reaches a maximum injection pressure of 2,000 bar. The rapid actuation piezo fuelinjectors allow up to eight injections per combustion cycle.
