Dit jaar rijdt er ook een Saab vertegenwoordiging mee met de Mille Miglia. Zowel Victor Muller als Jan Ake Jonsson rijden met een uit het Saab museum geleende auto. Zie onderstaand knipsel uit het FD van vandaag:

En daar, in een roomkleurig, druppelvormig, tweetakt-Saabje, een bekend gezicht, onze Victor Muller. Hoe druk ook, nimmer zal hij een Mille Miglia laten schieten. Zijn jaarlijkse opfrisser, één oneindige, hem toejuichende menigte, een stimulans om vóórt te gaan. Hopelijk haalt hij dit keer wél de finish. Moet lukken, met deze Saab-replica van een rallytype 93 uit 1957. Prrt, 50 pk slechts. Geplukt uit het Saab Museum in Trollhättan, dat als kers op de taart met de boedel meekwam. Victor berijdt de auto met oudste zoon Olivier. Met eenzelfde model, pal daarachter, zijn ceo bij Saab, Jan Ake Jonsson met zoon Cristian. Buiten mededinging rijden 130 Ferrari's vóór de Mille Miglia uit.

Welcome coffee, administrative and technical checks, assignation of event numbers and road books.
Parking of trailers and transportation trucks inside the Fiera.
8.30 am – 3.30 pm Cars entered head for Piazza della Loggia for the sealing.
8.30 am – 12.00 noon Cars presented to the public in Piazza della Loggia.
8.30 am – 3.30 pm Cars exhibited in piazzas and specially designated areas of the city centre.
10.00 am Blessing of a representative of the cars in Piazza Paolo VI.
5.30 am – 8.30 pm Buffet dinner at the Mille Miglia Museum in Brescia.
7.30 pm Start of the first car from Viale Venezia for the Brescia – Bologna leg and presentation of the cars to the public.

Cars parked in the Fiera.
Shuttle service to the various hotels. Welcome snack in hotel rooms with appetizer and fruit. Overnight stay.

FRIDAY 7th MAY
6.00 am – 10.00 am Shuttle service from the hotels to the parking area reserved for Mille Miglia cars.
7.30 am start of the first car from Bologna for the Bologna– Rome leg.
12.30 pm – 3.40 pm Lunch buffet in Urbino.
8.10 pm Arrival of the first car in Rome (Foro Italico).
On-stage parade of cars to present them to the public in Castel Sant’Angelo.
Cars parked overnight in the secure Villa Borghese car park.
Shuttle services to the various hotels.
Buffet dinner in the hotels and overnight stay.

SATURDAY 8th MAY
5.00 am – 8.30 am Shuttle service from the hotels to the Villa Borghese indoor car park.
6.30 am Start of the first car from Rome for the Rome – Brescia leg.
11.30 am – 2.00 pm Buffet lunch in Buonconvento (SI).
10.05 am – 12.10 am Transit through Manerbio (BS) and packed dinner.
10.30 pm – 1.30 am Arrival of the first car in the centre of Brescia.
Presentation of the cars to the public in Viale Venezia.
Overnight stay in the hotels. Cars parked in the secure areas of the Fiera di Brescia. .

SUNDAY 9th MAY
11.00 am Shuttle service from the hotels to the Teatro Grande. Awards ceremony.
1.30 pm Shuttle service to the Mille Miglia Museum.
Aperitif and farewell lunch in Brescia.

Historic Recreation: Saab and Spyker CEOs to Drive Classic Saabs on Mille Miglia

Saab and Spyker CEOs to run Saab 93s in 2010 Mille Miglia Celebration of class win in 1957

Trollhättan, Sweden. Italian hillsides are about to reverberate again to the distinctive crackle of a Saab two-stroke engine. Providing the soundtrack will be Saab Automobile CEO Jan Åke Jonsson and Saab Automobile Chairman and Spyker Cars CEO Victor Muller, who will each drive a 1957-vintage Saab 93 at this year’s historic Mille Miglia road race.

The two executives are celebrating the 93’s class win on this unique event 53 years ago with cars prepared by the Saab Car Museum in Sweden. Jonsson and Muller will be following, at a more leisurely pace, in the wheel tracks of the 1957 class winner crewed by Charlie Lohmander and co-driver Harald Kronegård. Today’s annual classic recreation of the 1,000-mile (1,600 km) Brescia-Rome-Brescia route is held over three days on open roads and decided on punctuality between check-points. Jonsson and Muller will be co-driven by their sons, Christian, 38, and Olivier,18, respectively.

Powered by a 45 hp, 748 cc, three-cylinder engine, but weighing only 810 kilos, the Saab 93’s agile handling and good aerodynamics enabled it to embarrass far more powerful, larger cars. “Saab’s early success on this event is part of our rich heritage,” said Jan Åke Jonsson. “We’re looking forward to competing once again with the Saab 93, although we won’t be driving it quite so fast.”

This year’s event, from 6 – 8 May, is Victor Muller’s tenth Mille Miglia. “The 93 is unlike any other car I’ve entered, which is hardly surprising as it’s a Saab,” he said. “Jan Åke and I will enjoy the event and we’re looking forward to a little friendly rivalry between team-mates. It certainly won’t be as intense as the competition between Eklund and Blomqvist when they were rallying with Saabs in the late 70s.”

Saab’s 1957 Mille Miglia success was followed by Erik ‘Mr Saab’ Carlsson’s overall victory on the Finnish 1000 Lakes Rally later the same year, both results bringing early international recognition for the Saab brand. Carlsson would go on to achieve back-to-back Monte Carlo wins and a hat-trick of RAC Rally victories in the early 60s.

Between 1955 and 1960, 52,731 Saab 93s were built at Trollhättan, where Saabs are still produced today. Its frontal styling introduced a new face for Saab, carried forward by the 96 sedan and 95 station wagon which stayed in production until 1980.

Hopen dat de heren geen gehoorbeschadiging oplopen, wat met een race-uitlaat maken die Saabs een oorverdovend, daarnaast hebben ze beide waarschijnlijk een 3 bak en maken behoorlijk wat toeren voor zo'n oud beestje
