Ik zou het persoonlijk geen gekke partner vinden gezien hun innovatiedrang qua design. Renault heeft ongetwijfeld meer oog voor de waarden waar Saab eens voor stond (bijv. veiligheid, innovatief, anders dan anderen).

Renault reported to have bid for Volvo Cars
11th October 2005

Renault is said to have approached Ford Motor Company with an offer to buy Volvo Cars out of Ford’s PAG brand group, in order to compete with German premium brands as it has been unable to do with its own large models. Ford is said to have declined the offer, but Renault, according to a Vehicle News report, has not abandoned the idea of acquiring a premium brand, such as Saab, since alliance partner Nissan’s premium Infiti brand has no profile in the European market.

Vehicle News also suggests that after considering some kind of financial relationship with DaimlerChrysler last spring, Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn has more recently been studying the possibility of forming an alliance with either GM or Ford, with an exchange of shares, on condition that the US Administration undertook to relieve either firm from some of its pension obligations.

Other related stories circulating in automotive media last week included the suggestion that Ford CEO and chairman Bill Ford had approached Carlos Ghosn with an offer to take over his CEO role at Ford – an offer Ghosn had declined. Mr Ford said this week only that he regularly talked to senior executives of other OEMs.

Toyota lijkt me nu het beste voor SAAB, zeker nu Subaru meedoet met deze club. En in de nieuwe tevredenheidstest van Autoweek staan de volgende 3 merken 'toevallig' bovenaan:

Lexus
Subaru
Toyota.

Hopelijk wordt Saab niet opgeslokt door Renault want de kwaliteit zou er geenszins op beteren voor Saab, kijk maar wat er met Nissan gebeurt is.

SAAB vs Infiniti: Infinti heeft dan wel geen profiel alhier, maar SAAB is -in tegenstelling tot Volvo- toch wel een beetje verkouden. Heb eens vernomen dat de turnaround van Audi door de jaren heen veel meer middelen heeft genomen dan de introductie van Lexus.

De verkoudheid van zowel SAAB als GM maakt wel dat SAAB voor waarschijnlijk weinig te verkrijgen is.

de hamvraag is natuurlijk : wie neemt de schuldenlast op zich? dat torst SAAB momenteel mee als een molensteen...

Saab and GM deny report of possible sale

STOCKHOLM, Sweden - General Motors Corp. and Saab angrily denied a newspaper report Thursday that said the carmaker was looking to sell the Saab brand, calling it one "of the coarsest speculations" they had heard.

Swedish financial newspaper Dagens Industri, citing unnamed sources only, reported that Saab Automobile AB was being shopped around by its parent, GM, to possible buyers in China and France's Renault SA.

"These are unreliable speculations. GM stands behind Saab all the way," Peter Augustsson, chief executive of Saab and a board member for GM Europe, told Swedish public radio. "Saab is here today and manufactures good products. We will be here in the future and make even better products."

Company spokesman Christer Nilsson called the report "one of the coarsest speculations we've heard and it goes in a completely wrong direction."

"The fact is that GM's management has expressed strong support for Saab as a brand and also attaches great importance to having Saab as part of its production portfolio," he told The Associated Press. "Saab is an important player in the premium segment and Saab is one of the few brands that GM is selling globally."

Late last year GM said it would cut as many as 12,000 jobs in Europe, where the world's largest automaker is struggling to end years of losses amid fierce competition and weak demand.

GM has said that only one of its European plants should be used to produce midsize cars, a task now divided between the Saab plant in Trollhaettan and an Opel plant in Ruesselsheim, Germany. A decision is expected by the end of March.

GM said 15 percent of management jobs in Europe would be eliminated as part of the program, which aims to produce cost savings of $665 million a year.

The company refused to say how much the job-cutting agreement would cost. In Germany, GM pledged to avoid forced layoffs and encouraged workers to leave voluntarily by offering them buyouts and help with retraining and job placement.

The Swedish government has agreed to make nearly $300 million in improvements to road and rail access to the Saab plant in Trollhaettan as part of an effort to persuade GM to keep the plant in its manufacturing plans.

Renault denies it is mulling link with Ford or GM

PARIS -- Renault SA denied on Wednesday a media report saying it was considering making an offer for Ford Motor Co. or General Motors.

"The article is baseless. (Chief executive Carlos) Ghosn is not closely studying a possible tie-up with Ford or GM," a company spokesman said.

Ghosn became chief executive of Renault in April and is still chief executive of its Japanese affiliate Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. He is due to unveil a three-year strategy for Renault on Feb. 9.

French financial weekly Challenges said in its issue to be published on Thursday that Ghosn was "dreaming of a three-way alliance with Ford or General Motors".

The magazine said Ghosn had been considering a bid for DaimlerChrysler AG, but the recovery of the share price of the U.S.-German group had led him to change aim.

"He is closely studying an alliance with General Motors or Ford, where he declined an offer by the family to become chairman," the magazine said, adding the market value of the two U.S. groups was smaller than that of Renault and much smaller than that of Nissan.

"A precondition for such an operation, which would take place in the form of a share swap and that Ghosn wants to be friendly, would be that the U.S. state assumes at least part of the pension costs," the paper said.

Renault has a market capitalization of $28 billion, and Nissan's market cap is $52.7 billion.

Ford and GM, with a junk debt rating, are each worth about $17.5 billion.
